The nomination phase for the prestigious Virchow Prize for Global Health has begun. This important and high-ranking international award recognizes outstanding achievement in successfully addressing complex global health challenges. The prize is awarded annually, for the first time at a festive ceremony on October 15, 2022 in Berlin on the eve of the World Health Summit.

The newly created prize aims to encourage big ideas and a global commitment to achieving the health-related sustainability goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Prize winners are honored with a cash prize of €500,000 for their many years of commitment and innovative contributions to improving global health.

It is awarded to individuals, organizations or institutions that have made a significant contribution to strengthening global health through their life’s work or work – whether through civil society, scientific, humanitarian, social , political or economic.

The official announcement of the winners of the Virchow Prize for Global Health takes place each year on October 13, Rudolf Virchow’s birthday. Virchow’s character combined an interdisciplinary and humanistic concept of health and remains a role model for overcoming complexity and meeting challenges to improve global health.

The Virchow Foundation for Global Health wishes to raise awareness of the importance of global health and to use the award to recognize particularly innovative, long-term and sustainable achievements and contributions. The Berlin and Münster-based charitable foundation was established as part of a commitment to civil society with the support of the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.
