Race day in Kempten attracts 1500 participants – sport in the Allgäu

The weather would have been better for the New Year’s race than race day. But 1,500 Kempten runners are not deterred by the cold.

No, it was not the New Year’s race that took place in Kempten on Sunday – despite wintry temperatures and snowy trees. “It was warmer on New Year’s Eve,” laughed organizer Joachim Saukel when he gave an overall positive review of Kempten Running Day after the first day since 2019.

“Everyone was extremely happy about it,” Saukel said. For the past two years, there had been “race weeks”. Due to the weather and corona, fewer athletes started than in 2019 – at that time there were 2500 – Saukel was nevertheless satisfied with around 1500 participants, where he particularly underlined the impressive number of 300 girls and boys who more than 750 in the “Kids Run”. and 1500 meters were there.

On the other hand, well-known names like Corinna Harrer, Carola Dörries or Tobias Prater, who were among the favorites but were slowed down by Corona, were not there. Carolin Kirtzel, a true Bremen native, stepped into the breach and set a new course record over five kilometres. Half marathon winner Nick Jäger expressed his solidarity with Ukraine.

The Penzberger wore a jersey that he had swapped with a Ukrainian rider at the European Junior Championships – who had in the meantime had to pass. Among the women, Charlotte Heim (Dietmannsried) won in the Allgäu, as did Yannic Baier (Sonthofen) over ten kilometers.

Combined David Mach (Buchenberg) finished tenth in the 5000 meters.
