Divide
The Thonon diet promises to lose up to 10 pounds in just two weeks. However, there are medical issues.
Frankfurt – A new dietary trend is gaining ground: With the so-called Thonon diet, those who want to lose weight rely on a protein-rich diet. The French diet is described as low in calories and high in protein. The developers even claim that the Thonon diet is one of the fastest and most effective diets in the world.
The popular diet, named after the town of Thonon-Les-Bains on Lake Geneva, promises to lose up to ten kilograms in just two weeks. After the diet initially enjoyed great popularity in France, numerous testimonials and before/after photos from other countries are now spreading on the internet, purporting to prove its success. But what is behind?
Thonon diet: Lose weight thanks to a low-calorie intake and a high-protein diet
The Thonon diet consists of two phases. In the so-called weight loss phase, between 600 and 800 calories can be consumed daily. In the next stabilization phase, calorie intake is increased to 1200-1500 calories per day. The weight loss phase should last a maximum of two weeks, while the stabilization phase is scheduled for one week per kilo lost. According to the developers, the weight loss phase should not last more than two weeks at a time, otherwise there is a risk of nutrient deficiency.

Thonon diet: Losing weight with this diet is recommended
During the Thonon diet, three protein-rich meals a day and beverages such as water, unsweetened black coffee, or unsweetened tea are allowed. Carbohydrates are only a very small part of this diet. According to the inventor’s site, the one-day meal plan of the Thonon diet might look like this:
breakfast | Coffee or tea without milk or sugar |
Lunch | two eggs with spinach |
having dinner | grilled steak with salad |
Successes are often short-lived: lose weight with the Thonon diet
Due to the low calorie intake, weight loss success is certain, but weight loss can only be short-lived. “With this type of calorie restriction, the expected weight loss is about 2 kg per week. Even if water is also lost initially, a weight loss of this magnitude is not possible,” says Hans Hauner , Professor of Nutritional Medicine and Director of the Else Kröner-Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine in Munich. Deutsche Welle. On the one hand, after the diet, the body needs less energy than before, on the other hand, reserves are created for the next need. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a minimum calorie intake of 1200 calories per day.
