Apple previewed watchOS 9 during the WWDC 2022 keynote. Apple Watch users will have more watch faces to choose from in the future. In the updated workout app, advanced metrics, views, and workout experiences help users take their training to the next level. watchOS 9 brings sleep stages to the Sleep app, and a new FDA-approved AFib history feature offers deeper insight into a user’s state (this feature appears to only be available in states States at the beginning). The new medication app allows users to easily and discreetly manage, understand and track medications. However, there are many other innovations in watchOS 9.
Apple introduces four new watch faces with watchOS 9. Lunar, representing the relationship between the Gregorian calendar and the lunar calendar used in many cultures such as Chinese, Islamic and Hebrew; Playtime, a dynamic artwork unique to the Apple Watch created in collaboration with artist Joi Fulton; Metropolitan, a classic type-focused dial that changes style when the digital crown is turned; and Astronomy, an original watch face that’s been completely redesigned to include a new star map and up-to-date cloud data.
Additionally, watchOS 9 introduces improved and modernized complications.
Just like in recent years, Apple has also improved the training app in many nooks and crannies. The Workout app has been updated to provide richer performance metrics and new workout experiences to help you reach your fitness goals. You can switch between training views using the Digital Crown to see key metrics for different training styles.
Heart rate zones, which can be created manually or calculated automatically using personalized health data, can be used to monitor workout intensity
For triathletes, the Workout app now supports a new type of multi-sport workout that automatically switches between each sequence of swim, bike, and run workouts and uses motion sensors to recognize movement patterns. As each workout is completed, a redesigned summary page in the fitness app provides additional details with interactive graphs for further analysis. You can also create individual workouts.
New running form metrics including stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation can all be added as metrics in training views. These metrics are displayed in the Fitness app summary and in the Health app, where users can see trends over time and learn from patterns.
Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 offers even more insight with the introduction of sleep stages. Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can detect when users are in REM, central, or deep sleep. Users see sleep stage data on Apple Watch in the Sleep app and can view more detailed information such as sleep time and additional metrics such as heart rate and breath rate in the comparison tables on the Apple Watch. sleep in the Health app on iPhone.
