Stuttgart (dpa) – After his lucky punch in the very last second, Konstantinos Mavropanos stormed the fan curve of VfB Stuttgart completely detached. With his goal in the eighth minute of added time, the Greek secured the Swabians’ 2-1 (1-1) win against Hertha BSC.
“There was always the belief that we could score,” Stuttgart caretaker coach Michael Wimmer told Sky. “I kind of had a feeling the Dinos would get a header. Of course, we’re over the moon and happy that it’s working to make it 2-1.”
Hertha, on the other hand, was served. “The game lasts until the end. I’m really angry, really angry,” said midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius. VfB quickly took the lead thanks to Serhou Guirassy (4th minute). Dodi Lukebakio has long made Berliners dream of at least one point (19th). But then Mavropanos struck from a Borna Sosa corner in injury time. With the victory, the Stuttgarters leave the relegation place, the sight of Hertha goes further.
VfB managed to hit each other this time
Shortly before, the VfB had to face a moment of shock: after a painful head duel with Ivan Sunjic, captain Wataru Endo was evacuated from the field after long treatment.
Both teams are still in the bottom third of the table, Stuttgart with 14 points and Hertha with eleven. But what remained a problem at VfB under Wimmer was the susceptibility in the first quarter of an hour. VfB have already conceded eight goals in this period.
Not much was missing against Hertha and an early ninth goal would have been added. However, Lukebakio’s failed scene was the only wobble early on. And unlike many previous games, this time the VfB managed to hit each other. After a pass from Tiago Tomás, who was involved in a goal in the third game in a row, Guirassy appeared in front of Hertha goalkeeper Oliver Christensen and scored.
It was a fighting game
The two teams met in an intense match at eye level. Guest coach Sandro Schwarz, who made no changes from the 2-3 win over FC Bayern Munich, also predicted such a game. “It will be a competitive match. We have to defend well and take our chances,” he said.
And his team took advantage of one of the rare opportunities. Because Silas missed the 2-0, Lukebakio equalized. Borna Sosa lost sight of center Jonjoe Kenny and striker Waldemar Anton. Hertha almost turned the tide before the break. Defender Hiroki Ito, one of three new players in the starting XI, saved Lucas Tousart’s header from the line.
Wimmer’s plan to take the fans with him and play hard worked for a long time. “That’s how I imagine our football,” said the 42-year-old, whose future will be decided during the World Cup break. However, Silas and Tiago Tomás rarely used the speed advantages against the Hertha defence. Nevertheless, it was still enough to win – as Mavropanos hit his head at the last second.
