You Don't Need Flood Insurance For All Types Of 'Floods'

By Aydan Corkern

Something a lot of people don't understand about their homeowner's insurance policy is that there is a difference in coverage between a flood that is considered a natural disaster and that of a waterbed busting or a tree limb caving in the roof of your house and letting a ton of water inside. Many people don't understand that you do not have to have flood insurance in order to be covered in the case of the latter.

Your homeowner's insurance does cover cases of water damage that have nothing to do with a natural flood from a natural disaster. Whether what you own is a condominium, a townhome, or a traditional home, water damage to your home is covered. The only thing that flood insurance is required for is a natural flood.

There are a number of examples of incidents in which water damage is covered by your normal homeowner's insurance.

If your three year old turns the bath on upstairs and floods the bathroom and the hallway, it is completely covered. Even though the act was deliberate, it was in essence an accident, since in most cases the three year old would not be aware of the trouble simply turning a knob could cause. Even if you, an adult, accidentally overflow the bathtub, you are still covered because it was an accident.

If strong winds come through your area, blow off some of your roofing and the rain pours in, you're covered.

If a dishwasher hose bursts and floods your kitchen floor, you're covered. This same principle also applies if the hose on your washing machine bursts and floods your laundry room. Or maybe the hose on your refrigerator's ice maker ruptures while you are out of town.

In all of these situations, mold remediation is also covered under your homeowner's insurance. If it is caused by a covered event, such as a pipe bursting or rain getting inside your home, then the mold remediation is also covered. These instances above can certainly cause mold growth, but you need to catch the mold growth in its early stages so there can be no dispute as to what caused it.

A case in which mold is not covered is if you neglect to have a steam vent in your bathroom and the humidity causes mold to breed on the walls and ceiling. This is considered negligence and they will not pay to have the mold removed.
