Which Is Better: Vertical Or Horizontal Blinds?

By Christopher Smith

Vertical blinds and horizontal blinds are very practical shades and blinds and are quite alike to each other. The variance is in the way they affix themselves to the window although they can both be manually operated. They are a favorable window decoration, and they provide an effective way of presenting your window while achieving the privacy you desire.

The main variance between vertical and horizontal blinds, is in the manual rotating function that provides the homeowner with the option of allowing a lot of light to come through, or restrict it to a bit. If you want to altogether block out the light, simply ensure the blinds are completely shut and the slats will overlap. The window frame is attached at the top and bottom and have a chain which ensures it stays in order and in place. Spend a few more dollars, and you will find that there are some modern varieties that are weighted down near the bottom which do not need a chain.

Vertical blinds come in a wide variety of thicknesses and materials. Some are embossed with patterns, and a whole pallet of colors is available. The more block-out they provide, usually, the more expensive they will be. Some vertical blinds are very wide so you need less individual slats to cover the window, where others are narrower and the blind will have further slats.

Horizontals usually come with cords that are attached at the right or left side of the window. This feature enables you to turn a wooden or plastic rod that activates the cords to operate the slats to turn. These slats are positioned vertically and are usually attached at the top of the window. You can open or close as you like, and filter the sun allowed through into your room.

Blinds are fantastic for your kitchen or bathroom, and any place in the home where you use water. Where curtains and fabric window coverings can be broken and stained from splashing and steam, blinds are easy to wipe over and are often waterproof. Verticals can be easier to clean of the two types, and offer the extra bonus of not keeping the dust like horizontals do.

Also, today there are electrical controlled blinds that you operate with a remote. This type have many safety features, which is great if you have kids and pets that can pull at the blinds and cords that are hanging. Usual slats can have pointed edges and spaces between each slat, which kids could pop their little heads in and get stuck. It's important to strongly consider the safety that vertical blinds may not provide in this regard, and also remember there are so many other forms of window coverings if blinds aren't applicable.

There are some thoughts on whether blinds are an effective and practical way of presenting your windows. With a lot of popular colors and textures available, you are bound to be able to find one to suit your decor. Some people are looking for something that is more chic and today the custom made variety is more expensive and more diverse in the range available. They are considered to be more excellent for the office and for people who like a contemporary modern feel.
