The Cute Kennels Tails

By Chris Jensen

We didn't have an area large enough for them. But, wait. We were constructing accommodation to keep pigs and these were almost finished. They would provide the usual sleeping quarters and a large open area. Perfect. The whole family arrived en masse to deliver their babies. I had to try and keep a straight face as the rather large lady, in very high-heeled open sandals, teetered down to the selected 'kennel'. The dogs were duly ensconced with their bedding, toys and their particular brand of food. Fine, that would save on the feeding.

That evening Colin blissfully opened the double gates and marched in to check on their water supply and fill their food bowls. They didn't look particularly friendly, but we were experienced! Before he knew it, one of them had nipped him on the leg. He let out a yell and ran for the first gate, receiving another nip before he got it open. "That's it. I'm not going in there again." Dion then took the morning shift, and that was more difficult as the area also had to be cleaned. He took a stick to hold them off while the staff cleaned, but the men were having nothing to do with it, and Dion had to attempt to hold off three snarling dogs while picking up their combined droppings. He wasn't very successful and received a nasty graze down his shin. You wouldn't think that, with their squashed faces, Bulldogs could inflict a graze.

I volunteered to take the next morning shift. I entered with great care, trying to watch all three of them at the same time. With a blanket I attempted to drive them into the sleeping area so the men could come in and clean. I was also not successful. One after the other they escaped me, and nothing would persuade the staff to come near these terrors. I skirted round the walls, keeping my back to the dogs while I refilled their food and water containers. But the moment I tried to use the spade, they made a concerted attack. I leap for the five foot fence but before I could climb it, I had my skirt ripped off.

The men rolled about laughing as their 'madam' perched insecurely on the top of a rickety fence in her undies. After that, we went in as group of three, each watching one of the dogs. It worked, and we were able to return the babies to their parents in good order.
