Sit Down In The Quantum of Solace

By Stellar Stevens

Anna Pinnock was the set director for the much-awaited new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and she's done some interesting detail work with the furniture seen throughout the movie. The designer has blatantly stated that no, she did not actually watch the older Bond films for inspiration when it came to organising her sets and bringing in certain furniture styles - she simply wanted to come in with a fresh palate to talk to filmmakers and discuss what was exactly right for Quantum, as she does with all the other movies she works on. The result is, as expected from any Bond film regardless of the era, pure luxury and realistic touches from the furniture in all scenes, from all angles.

B&B Italia provided much of the furniture present in the movie, which Pinnock says helped her shape a somewhat modernised version of the 1970's era of movie furniture, without the somewhat tragic over-contemporary look of many 60's and 70's films. Stylistically, the furniture in this movie can definitely be defined as retro, but the difference between Pinnock's use of moderns styles and the general 'retro' aesthetic is the fact that each set manages to look clean, polished, high-end and in no way cheesy or unnecessary.

One of the struggles when it comes to putting together a furniture set for the camera is space. Set designers for Quantum had to take the size of their furniture pieces into account when filming because in most cases, in order to fit in all the camera equipment, the rooms and other spaces had to be made much larger than life. To balance out this difference in size, Pinnock had to use custom-made luxury items like the enormous bed set from the movie. To include the massive, room-spanning headboard as well as what needed to look like a regular luxury-sized bed, it was necessary to hire on the furniture designers to work from Pinnock`s ideas as well as set measurements.

In all, if the furniture design and style has anything to say about it, James Bond has not lost his sense of class and sophistication in his latest flick. From the 1950's style wingback chairs, to the retro-modern furnishings and the massive bed capable of making anyone envious, Bond is able to retain his charm as a spy and still pull in the crowds for a look at how the 'better half' live. Pinnock has done an excellent job designing the sets to seemingly ooze perfection, ease and the millions of dollars (or pounds!) available to James Bond and all his ilk.
