Sewage Damage Cleanup: What You Should Have And Destroy

By Chris Blastoyout

Imagine this scenario: You leave your home for the day. When you leave, you know everything is fine and everything is in its place. However, while you are gone, the unlikeliest of things happen, sewage damages your home. Now you have to begin the process of sewage damage cleanup. This can make many people sick to their stomach. Where do you even start to do the sewage damage cleanup?

The moment you find the sewage problems is the moment you begin the sewage damage cleanup. Leaving it for too long can cause irreparable damage especially when it is contained in a closed environment such as a basement. The microorganisms that are in the sewage can breed, causing health problems for your family later on.

You will have to make sure that any power and gas to your home has been cut off. If you aren't sure, then call an electrician to help you.

Some of the cleaning materials you will need to do your sewage damage cleanup are:

* Brooms
* Mops
* Sponges
* Brushes
* Buckets
* Masks
* Rubber boots
* Water hose
* Rags
* Gloves (typically the rubber kind)
* Trash bags
* Cleaning products
* Disinfectants

Make sure you use the mask for your nose and mouth. The smell that is emitted from the sewage can be hazardous to your health and is, to say the least, quite awful to smell. You'll want to air out your house as you cleanup so leave doors and windows open for as long as possible. Along with the masks, be sure to wear gloves and other suitable clothing so any open wounds do not become infected.

Before you initiate cleanup and start disinfecting, be sure everyone is out of the home, especially those who have breathing problems.

Once you got all the water removed, begin spraying disinfectant to limit the chance of infection.

If your home has been completely flooded, assume that everything has been infected. There are certain items that must be thrown out. These include:

* Food (You wouldn't want to ingest sewage, would you?)
* Any stuffed animals or toys (you don't want your children playing with these, right?)
* Mattresses and pillows (Imagine using these to sleep on once infected.)
* Chairs or couches that are upholstered (sitting on these can be rather nasty.)
* Padding for the carpet (this can breed mold if not thrown out.)
* Makeup (Would you really want this on your face?)
* Medicines (Using medicines touched by sewer water is just asking for an infection or disease of some sort.)

While you are doing your sewage damage cleanup, consider throwing out these items:

* Foam Rubber;
* Larger carpets; and
* Paper products like books.

As you are in the process of the sewage damage cleanup, make sure you are constantly washing your hands so the sewage is not spreading from place to place.

Remember, the two goals of the sewage damage cleanup are to rid your home of the disease-ridden water and restoring your home to its original state. You should check your insurance policy to see if this type of damage is covered. Costs for cleanup can get expensive.
