How To Buy The Right Golf Balls

By Lorne McCaslin

Believe it or not, the golf balls you use can really have an affect on your game. Ever had a horrible day on the range? Or an unusually good day where you made every shot with ease? It could have something to do with the golf balls you choose.

Many golfers are playing with the wrong golf balls and they don't know it. There are so many different balls available to choose from. One manufacturer can develop several different types of balls for different playing levels and budgets. You need to know how to buy the right golf ball to improve your game. It's not enough to automatically choose the same golf balls as your favorite golfer. Most manufactures separate their balls into two categories: two piece and multi layer golf balls.

Two piece golf balls

A two piece golf ball is designed to be a distance traveling ball. It is made up of the core and a single cover.

They allow you to achieve maximum distance regardless of how fast you swing. Two piece balls usually perform like low spinning golf balls, and give you less sidespin when hit off center. They are cheaper to buy than multi layer balls since they use less material to make.

Multi layer balls

Multi layer golf balls are "three piece" or "four piece" balls consisting of a core, a second layer known as a mantle and a cover. These balls are a bit softer than two layer balls. This gives them a higher spin rate. The multiple layers that make up these golf balls transfers energy from the swing to give you greater distance. These balls perform well according to how they "feel" to an individual golfer. Since they can be more expensive, the best way to find out which balls perform the best is to try using a few different recycled multi layer balls first. This can save you the expense of buying a dozen balls that just aren't right.

What type of player are you?

When you are looking for the right golf balls to help your game, you need to know what type of player you are, and the type of player you hope to become. For example, if you are a high handicap player who just wants to achieve more distance, a simple two piece ball will do the trick. If you want more back spin around the green to help you with your shots, a multi layer ball will work much better.

Finding just the right ball

Golf balls are more complex than many might imagine. Ball compression and the dimple count on your ball can affect the travel distance and spin. Again, the best way to find the best balls to enhance your performance is to try out a few different varieties first. Check with sporting goods stores to find out if you can purchase individual sleeves of golf balls instead of buying them by the dozen to save money.
