Avoiding The Holiday Tension

By rodrigo rehn

Do you and your spouse seem to get into little arguments every holiday season? The holidays are right around the corner and already you may cringe when you think of Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. This may be a time that you want to look forward to, but you know in your heart that there is going to be more tension than peace and merriment. You can stop the cycle of tension and arguments this year; don't go through one more holiday season at one another's throats.

The best thing that you can do going into the holidays is to do away with all of your expectations. When you learn not to expect anything from your spouse during the holidays you will be more likely to just let things roll off your shoulders when they bother you. When your spouse isn't doing what you thought they would be doing, it is less likely to get to you because you didn't really expect them to. You need to do away with your expectations and just decide what you are going to do. This will do away with a lot of the tension that you feel.

You should also focus on being more flexible. Many people have an idea of how they would like every holiday gathering, meal, or activity to go. The fact of the matter is that very little actually goes according to plan. The more people you have involved in an activity of any kind the more likely there are going to be problems or delays. Learn to relax and expect the unexpected, you will certainly find that life during the holidays becomes a lot more enjoyable.

If you really need the help of the people around you, be sure that you let them know that. We often assume that the people around us know how we feel, but this is rarely true. You need to be open and honest about what you want and need from the people around you, when you do this you will know ahead of time whether or not they are willing to give you the help and support that you need. This will do away with those surprises and frustrations during the holidays.

These all seem like really simple suggestions, and they are, but they can be more difficult to actually follow through with. The reason for this is that you have a pattern of behavior that you have established for around the holidays and it can be hard to break out of those patterns. If you really want to experience the holidays without the tension, you should dedicate yourself to changing your behavior and expectations and you will likely find that you have a much better holiday season, as will the people around you!
